How I Got the Shot

Have you ever looked at a photo and wondered "How'd they do that"? I personally love a behind the scenes look at just about anything!

Late last month I had the amazing opportunity to spend two full days learning from dance photographer Rachel Neville in her NYC studio. It was a truly incredible experience to learn some new techniques that I can apply in my own work. The whole weekend was full of inspiration from Rachel, her team, the dancers, and the small group of talented photographers who attended with me.

For this shot I wanted to create a feeling of joy, while using some beautiful movement in Grace's dress. For me, joy starts with a bright and vibrant quality to the light and colors. To achieve that I placed a light where it would illuminate both Grace and the backdrop. Next we worked on Grace's pose to accentuate the beautiful lines in her feet and legs and to fine tune her arms to allow her spirit to virtually shine from her heart. Then I asked her to wear an expression of joy - which she absolutely exuded! Finally Rachel held the back hem of Grace's dress and released it just as Grace hit her pose. Anticipating all of that movement, I took the shot at just the right moment. Afterwards, in Photoshop, I removed a bit of Rachel's foot from the frame and added a very slight blue tone to the backdrop to coordinate with Grace's dress.

I love this photo - partially for how it looks, but largely of everything it reminds me. Looking at it I'm reminded of the awesome strength and beauty that is in us all, and of the power that comes from learning and collaborating with the people around us.

If you'd like to create something beautiful with me - to show yourself the amazing things that you can do - send me a note or give me a call. Let's create something beautiful together!
